My granddaughters, Callie and Angie, provided the inspiration for this painting. On a road trip together, they took a selfie in the north woods. I immediately thought “Halloween painting” and wanted to tie it to the legend of the Hodag, and here it is.

The Hodag is a fearsome creature resembling a large horned carnivore with a row of thick curved spines down its back. The city of Rhinelander, Wisconsin is strongly tied to tales of the Hodag with a history of sightings since 1893. It was said to be born from the ashes of cremated oxen abused by their masters in the lumber trade.
