Contemporary Impressionist City nocturnes and urban landscapes
Art critic Brian Sherwin commented on Tom Shropshire's cityscapes, stating, "Often it seems that artists make a point of offering romanticized images of city life... in doing so, their images tend to lose the raw edge of reality by reducing city nightlife to dead space. That said, artist Tom Shropshire peels back that protective layer by revealing the energy of cluttered streets and bombardments of light – the viewer can imagine the sounds of horns blaring and street corner arguments -- the pulse that refuses to slumber when the sun goes down.".
Sherwin adds, "Shropshire captures the grit and glare of city life at night.".

Earth, Wind, Water & Fire
“Without atmosphere a painting is nothing.”
Rembrandt Harmenszoon Van Rijn
I have been influenced and inspired by the atmospheric paintings of British Victorian artist, John Atkinson Grimshaw, and the Hudson River School artists. These artists utilized Luminism or effects with special lighting techniques to convey lofty emotions through contrasts of light and dark. The Tonalism style is also inspirational. I admire the melancholy paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, and artists Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, Asher Durand, George Inness, James McNeal Whistler, Frederic Edwin Church and many others.
Fantasy, Halloween, Airships and vintage pulp Art
Paintings inspired by the pulp cover art of the 40’s and 50’s, and current work based on Film Noir, mystery, Science Fiction, Halloween, Steampunk and Pop Culture.
HALLOWEEN subjects and FANTASY paintings - If there is a child within all of us, it is this child that still shapes my artwork even today.
"A painting requires a little mystery, some vagueness, some fantasy. When you always make your meaning perfectly plain you end up boring people." (Edgar Degas)
Abstract Art - view this collection
Abstract expressionist work. Non-objective images.
Although I am primarily known as a contemporary impressionist painter, I have also been an abstract expressionist painter since the sixties. I cannot be confined to one or the other, so I embrace them both with joy! I currently paint many realistic subjects as well ...so I guess you could label me a representational or realist painter. Forget all the labels and just look.
"Realism and abstractionism are not enemies. They eat out of the same dish; but their digestive systems are different." (Leo Stein)
